Choice

Writer: Kathy CrouchKathy Crouch

OK, I’m back to take you on a brief journey into In the Seamless study by Angie Smith. I can’t cover the entire study, but my goal this week is to highlight some of the pieces that spoke to me. Maybe I can cover more in my future posts.

We read in Genesis that God created man in His own image. I will begin today with the fall that changed history. A choice was given to man. In my humble little opinion, that was a huge mistake! NEVER should man have a choice over good and evil. Satan has a way of swaying us to choose the wrong thing sometimes as he makes it look as enticing as possible. Our sin nature sticks its ugly head out and boom…destruction.

Why did God give us a choice?

Why didn’t He make it where we just obey Him and live happy, peaceful lives?

Angie states, “God created a situation where His people could choose whether or not to live in accordance with His rules. They chose not to. That decision shaped every person who would ever be born after them, because their disobedience resulted in separation from God. God is perfect, so the stain of sin put them, and us, in a state of opposition from Him. In and of ourselves, we do not have the power to bridge that gap.”

It is here where I can thank God for sending His precious Son to take care of bridging that enormous gap for us!

As we all know, God was grieved by how far from Him His creation had wandered and recognized that it would only continue to worsen. As a result, He determined the best way to deal with it was to wipe out creation. Regret is the word that comes to my mind. Did God regret that He made man? Only Noah and his family survived.

The question that keeps coming to mind is why did He let anyone live? Not why did He kill an entire world of people. Angie says, “Even when we didn’t deserve it, God gave us another chance. God doesn’t owe us a single thing. It’s His show, y’all. Every bit of it.”

My thoughts here is that God does that all the time, right? Always giving us another chance. Another chance to search our hearts, to get it right, to repent, to turn, to change, to make the right choice! Why does He love us that much? What did we do to deserve His mercy and grace? NOTHING! It’s just love. I can’t comprehend it, but I am so thankful for it. I can totally mess up and make the wrong choice every single day, but I know that I can ask for forgiveness and then God, in His great mercy and understanding, will forgive my sin and cleans me of all unrighteousness.

We are living in perilous times, and we will continue to make choices each day, so I would like to leave you with this scripture and poem as a reminder of how important our choices really are.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2)
