“Pray for kings and everyone who is in authority so that we can live a quiet and peaceful life in complete godliness and dignity. This is right and it pleases God our Saviour.” 1 Tim. 2:2-3 (CEB)
As you are reading this, our nation is less than 1 week away from Election Day 2024! We have been praying for the election, our country and its leaders for the last few Wednesday nights. Our weekly prayer meetings have been just that …. prayer meetings! Although, we have prayed for several different and specific items, this is one that we find ourselves right on top of!
We know that no matter the outcome of this election two things: (1) God is still in control and (2) our jobs have not changed. Both statements were made by church members during these weeks of prayer. We are not to be given over to a spirit of fear but one that is powerful, loving and self-controlled. (2 Tim. 7)
As we come down to these last few days, we should be fervent in prayer for “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful in what it can achieve.” James 5:16 (CEB) Our vote is important; it is our right as a citizen of this nation and a privilege to be able to do so. Cover this election in prayer, pray that those in high offices that are Christians will have bold voices and pray for those that may not know Christ. That’s a hard thing I think, praying for people of position that we don’t approve of and those who we feel don’t uphold our convictions and beliefs. We however are told to do so…reread that verse above!
I remember several years ago Blair and I were able to get an early ferry over to Fort Sumter and in so doing we witnessed the raising of our flag while the National Anthem was played. I can’t begin to describe the feeling of that experience. God has blessed the USA beyond measure and as a whole we have taken those blessings for granted. That day I had the biggest lump in my throat and tears in my eyes.
Generally, I make a note of things that I read, or what pops into my mind that I think will make a devotion. Today’s devotion was unplanned – until I began to type. Sometimes it happens that way. As I’ve said before, I get the lesson first and I needed to be reminded to pray.
In closing, I leave you with the preamble of The Constitution of the United States of America. May God Bless America!
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
